4 errors to avoid while using trash bags at home

4 errors to avoid while using trash bags at home

Taking out the trash, although not particularly pleasant, is an essential and fairly simple chore. However, the task can quickly become messy if the waste is not handled properly. So, using the right trash bags and waste bins in the right way is important to avoid leakage and odor in the home. So, to make the chore seamless, one may want to avoid the following mistakes while using trash bags at home:

1. Choosing the wrong size
Opting for trash bags that are the same size as the garbage can might seem like the obvious choice, but it can be a mistake. For starters, if there is too much waste in the bag, the contents will slip out of the bag and accumulate at the bottom of the can. So, one should always choose a bag that is slightly larger than the can, so that it can be easily folded along the edges of the can.

2. Not securing the bag
Even if one uses a large-sized trash bag, it can still slip off the edge of the can if one throws trash with force into the bag or if there is too much garbage in the bag. With the bag slipping off the edge, it will make a mess when one tries to take the trash out. To avoid this, one should secure the trash bag properly to the edge of the can using hooks, rubber bands, or duct tape.

3. Forgetting to check the bag
Trash bags can easily develop tears and holes, either due to a manufacturing defect or mishandling during packaging. Alternatively, dumping sharp objects such as broken glass, pencils, or tools like scissors in the trash can also tear the bag, resulting in the trash spilling out of the bag. So, one should always inspect the bag while putting it in the can as well as when taking it out to minimize mess.

4. Not sealing the bag
Forgetting to seal the bag, especially when taking out the trash, can give way to leaks, spills, and odor inside and outside the home. One should use ties, rubber bands, or adhesive tape to tie the trash bag. Additionally, insects and other pests may be attracted to the garbage. A sealed bag deters the pests from entering. However, one should ensure the seal is not tight enough to tear the bag.

5 easy home improvement hacks to try today

Home improvement projects are exhausting but can be extremely fun if they are thought through and well-researched. If you want to do some renovation or add a new touch to your home, we recommend starting with something small and seeing how far your DIY skills and ambition take you. Of course, the sky’s the limit but let’s start with your door for now. Here are some easy home improvement hacks that you can try. Statement doors This is the first thing anyone notices about your home, so wouldn’t it make sense to work your DIY magic here? Statement doors are a rage right now, and the beauty of it is that while it’s in style, you don’t have to follow any particular style or design. Just go with what resonates with your home decor style. Color it bright, add an expensive door knob, make it look vintage - endless choices to make a statement in your home. Lighting This is very important. Make sure you invest time, money, and energy into adding warmth and ambiance to your home with just the right lighting. The lamps are great; hanging lights are super, too - ensure you can create a comforting and homely vibe. Wouldn’t it be lovely if your guests felt right at home when they visited? Paint color and texture This doesn’t have to be too much. Unless, of course, you are looking to follow any particular theme, a well-painted home does combine everything. If you’re not a fan of any textured walls, pick a pastel, calming color that you can add to your wall. Accessorize the wall with the right paintings, wall hangings, and shelves, and you have an elegant setup. Flooring You’d be surprised at how much character this adds to your home. You can choose several options like wooden, marble, or tiles and decide what theme you would like to go for. Of course, you also must consider factors like budget, cleanliness, accessibility, and such. The marble looks great but costs a fortune! Wood adds a beautiful rustic feel, but it can be prone to termites, or if you live in a humid region, it may spoil the wood. So, pick wisely. Window treatments This is a great idea to add some pop of color to otherwise plain wall paint. You can try out just using bright, bold colors or even look at painting the windows with some design.

6 common window and door maintenance mistakes to avoid

Maintaining doors and windows should be a routine built into a household's cleaning plan. With moving parts and constant usage, they bear more brunt than one supposes. As such, they need to be strong, in perfect working conditions, and maintained in a way that extends their life span to the maximum. Here are six common door and window maintenance mistakes that should be avoided to prevent serious problems down the line: 1. Ignoring regular cleaning and maintenance In routine household cleaning and maintenance, door and window repair can sometimes get overlooked. Wiping them down or cleaning the windowpanes regularly, while a good practice, is not enough. Grease, debris, and dirt tend to accumulate in the corners and tracks and can lead to difficulty in smoothly opening and closing the doors and windows. Locking mechanisms, hinges, and rollers, if not lubricated, can wear out faster and make them more challenging to use. A silicone-based lubricant is ideal to keep the moving parts working smoothly. When cleaning wooden doors and window frames, use a soft, non-abrasive cloth with very little warm water. Avoid using too much water to prevent the wood from rotting. For aluminum parts, mild detergent and water can be used. 2. Not sealing gaps and cracks If ignored, small gaps and cracks in windows and doors can lead to wood warping and swelling and becoming susceptible to mold and rot over time. Regularly check for gaps and cracks and seal them with weatherstripping, sealant, or caulking. This makes the windows and doors more energy efficient and protects them from rain, sun, and cold weather. Caulk or sealant should be reapplied as soon as gaps are detected or if the previous layer has deteriorated to prevent them from getting any bigger and causing damage to the structure. 3. Using unnecessary force Slamming doors and windows and running them roughshod can damage the frames and weaken the structure. Avoid prying them open or letting them freely swing shut to extend their life span. Don't use excessive force if one has difficulty opening or closing them. Instead, check for debris or obstructions in the tracks or hinges. 4. Using harsh cleaning agents Cleaning products unsuitable for doors and windows can corrode, stain, discolor, or damage them over time. Harsh cleaning solutions and abrasive sponges should be avoided. Instead, mild detergents, microfiber clothes, and lint-free towels should be used for cleaning doors and windows. 5. DIY-ing repairs Sometimes, issues can seem minor and fixable without professional help. However, DIYing can be a mistake if one knows little about window and door maintenance. There's only so much a how-to video can do. If one does not know the underlying reason for the issue, like why a stuck window or a lock won't budge, trying to fix it by oneself can damage the window or door and cost way more than a simple repair by a professional. 6. Using cheap materials for repairs When repairing doors or windows, it's imperative to use quality materials, or at least those matching the original structure. Using low-quality, subpar, or cheap materials when repairing can cost one more in the long run, as they will require more maintenance sessions or frequent replacement. Repairing doors and windows using materials of similar quality as the original will ensure the repairs are sturdy, will hold for a long time, and won't tear away easily from the main structure, causing further damage.

Foods to avoid for managing bronchitis

Foods to avoid for managing bronchitis

Bronchitis is a lung condition in which the lining of the bronchial tubes, which are responsible for transporting air to and from the lungs, gets inflamed. The condition can be chronic or acute and can develop as a result of an underlying respiratory condition or a cold. Certain foods can also trigger the condition and cause the symptoms to worsen. Here are some foods to avoid when diagnosed with bronchitis. Dairy products People suffering from chronic bronchitis need to limit their intake of dairy products. When digested, these items release a compound known as casomorphin, which is known to elevate the amount of phlegm and mucus released by the body. This can lead to severe coughing, which could worsen wheezing and pain in patients suffering from the disease. Instead of dairy products, you can opt for alternatives such as almond or soy milk. Excess salt Excess salt can be extremely harmful to patients suffering from the disease because too much sodium can cause water retention in the body leading to difficulty breathing. To season your food, it is essential to opt for low-sodium salt alternatives, as suggested by a nutritionist, to counteract any harmful effects on the body. It is also essential to keep an eye on labels about the amount of salt present in snacks and processed foods.
